Good Attendance is VITAL
Every day, children learn new things and develop many skills.
There is a direct link between poor attendance and poor academic performance.
Children need to establish good habits and routines during the primary years – they will need this discipline when they enter the workplace, this will give them better career prospects.
Children miss more than just lessons when they miss school – they miss their friends and social skills development too.
Every day counts
Days off school add up to lost learning
- There are 365 days per year.
- There are 190 school days per year.
- There are approximately 13 weeks of school holidays each year - please use this time to go on holiday.
The Government’s Department for Education data very clearly demonstrates the link between absence and underachievement in schools.
The data shows that the more days a child misses, the less likely they are to reach expected standards and beyond.
For example, children who have 100% attendance, have a 92% chance of achieving the expected standard at the end of year 6 and a 51% chance of gaining a standard beyond this.
However, when attendance reaches 90%, the figures fall significantly to 68% achieving an expected level and only 16% going beyond this.

As you will be aware, holidays in term time are no longer being authorised and are subject to fixed penalty notices being issued. A child who has ten days off school for a holiday will achieve less than 95% attendance for the year, almost halving their chances of gaining a level beyond expectations.
Did you know?
A pupil who has 80% attendance misses an average of one day a week; nearly 40 days in a year – approx 8 weeks of every year – that’s over 200 hours of learning missed!
That is the same as a year off by the time a child is in Year 5!
We aim for all of our children to have attendance of 95% or above.
Punctuality is important
The school day starts at 9.00am. This is the time that the school register CLOSES. Children must in inside the classroom at 9am.
